How this calculator works

The base 2026 IRA limit is $7,500, plus a $1,100 catch-up if you are 50 or older. For Roth IRAs, eligibility phases out between $153,000–$168,000 of modified adjusted gross income (single) or $242,000–$252,000 (married filing jointly); the calculator prorates your allowed amount inside that range. Traditional IRA contributions are always allowed up to the limit if you have earned income — though the deduction may phase out, which is a separate rule.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as earned income for an IRA?

Wages, salaries, tips, self-employment income, and taxable alimony. Investment income and rental income do not count, and your contribution cannot exceed your earned income for the year.

Can I contribute to both a traditional and a Roth IRA?

Yes — the $7,500 limit is shared across all your IRAs. You can split it any way between traditional and Roth, but the total across both cannot exceed the limit, plus catch-up.

What if my income is too high for a Roth?

A backdoor Roth works for many people: contribute to a traditional IRA (contributions have no income limit) and convert it to a Roth. It is cleanest when you have no other pre-tax traditional IRA balance — otherwise the pro-rata rule applies.
