How this calculator works

Income is taxed in slices. The first $12,400 of taxable income (single filer, 2026) is taxed at 10%, the next slice at 12%, and so on up to 37%. Your marginal rate is the rate on the last dollar you earn; your effective rate is total tax divided by total income — always lower, because the early dollars were taxed at lower rates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between marginal and effective rate?

Your marginal rate is the tax rate on your next dollar of income — the bracket your top dollar falls into. Your effective rate is the average: total tax paid divided by total income. Because income is taxed progressively, your effective rate is always lower than your marginal rate.

Do these brackets apply to all my income?

No. The brackets apply only to your taxable income — after the standard deduction (or itemized deductions) and other adjustments. Long-term capital gains and qualified dividends have their own, lower brackets.
