How this calculator works

Tax is the price times the rate divided by 100, added to the price for the total. Worked example: a $100 item at 8.25% combined rate costs $8.25 in tax for a $108.25 total — and a $1,200 laptop at 6% costs $72 in tax, totaling $1,272.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my combined sales tax rate?

Your total rate is state rate plus any county and city rates, which can add several percentage points. Most states publish a rate lookup by ZIP code — California's base is 7.25% but some cities push the combined rate to 10%+.

Which states have no sales tax?

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Alaska and Montana allow local jurisdictions to levy their own taxes, so rates can still be above zero in places.

Is sales tax charged on online purchases?

Since the 2018 Wayfair ruling, states can require remote sellers to collect sales tax — you generally pay the rate for the state where the goods are delivered, not where the seller is located.

Are services taxed?

Most states tax goods but many exempt services like haircuts, repairs, and professional fees. Restaurant meals are taxed almost everywhere; groceries are exempt or taxed at a reduced rate in most states.
